The dedication of Grundy County’s first full-service morgue was held in 1992. We are located in the Southwest corner of the Administration Center building. Our inquests are conducted in the Board Room in this building. The morgue was designed with three specific goals in mind. First is to serve the needs of the residents of Grundy County, second is to meet the needs of the future, and the third and most important is to accomplish all of this in the most cost-effective means possible.

Autopsies are contained in the morgue that is an isolated room. It also contains X-ray equipment, and a large refrigeration-cooling unit that can hold seven bodies. The morgue also contains a freezer unit that can hold two bodies. A steel door separates the cooling units from the autopsy area. When delivering and picking up bodies a drive-in garage has been designed for total privacy. The garage area is designed with twelve cooling units that make it possible to cool the garage down to 40 degrees. This temperature is equal to the refrigeration inside the morgue cooler. By having this additional space and the ability to cool it down, the Coroner is able to have an emergency operation plan that can accommodate up to 75 bodies. There is an electric body lift, which allows the movement or transfer of a victim from the coroner’s cot to the morgue table and back again. There is also an industrial scale that allows the staff to accurately weigh the victim while on the morgue table.
