Meet the Team

Mark Hitt, J.D
Felony Assistant State’s Attorney
Mark Hitt received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, with a minor in Political Science, from Elmhurst College in 1993. He graduated from DePaul University, College of Law in February 1997. Mark began his career in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in 1998, leaving in 2011. In that time period, he tried hundreds of motions and felony cases in front of juries, as well as Judges – cases ranging from traffic matters to 1st Degree Murder cases involving gang members.
From there, Mark spent nearly seven years with the City of Chicago, as a supervising investigator with the Independent Police Review Authority, reviewing investigations of excessive force and racial bias alleged to have occurred by sworn officers. As a supervising investigator, he also responded to scenes of police-involved shootings and conducted preliminary investigations and evidence collection in those matters.
After practicing in the fields of criminal defense and family law, Mark returned to prosecution, here in Grundy County. His focus is on felony offenses, along with misdemeanor and felony domestic battery cases.

Kyle E. Klukas, J.D.
First Assistant State’s Attorney
Kyle E. Klukas joined the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office in 1997 as an Assistant State’s Attorney.
Assistant State’s Attorney Klukas completed his undergraduate training at the University of Illinois in 1989. He went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois School of Law in 1996. Mr. Klukas has over 25 years experience as an Assistant State’s Attorney and is co-director of the Felony Division.
Assistant State’s Attorney is also a retired Naval Officer.

Dan Weiss, J.D.
Assistant State’s Attorney
Daniel Weiss received his Juris Doctorate from Northern Illinois University Law School. After a short stint as a prosecutor in Mason County, Decatur, Illinois, Mr. Weiss spent thirty years as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Cook County. As an Assistant in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Mr. Weiss worked numerous assignments prosecuting traffic, misdemeanors and felonies. For much of his time in Cook County, Mr. Weiss worked in the Special Prosecutor’s Bureau Cold Case Murder/Organized Crime Unit where he prosecuted homicide, solicitation for murder and human trafficking cases.

John M. Kogut, J.D.
Felony Assistant State’s Attorney
John M. Kogut received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois and his Juris Doctorate from John Marshall Law School. John began his legal career as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Cook County prosecuting traffic, misdemeanor, preliminary hearings and felonies.
After practicing in the field of personal injury, Mr. Kogut returned to the Will County State’s Attorney’s officer prosecuting felonies. Since joining the Grundy County State’s Office in May 2022, Mr. Kogut has prosecuted a variety of offenses from misdemeanors to felonies.

Russell A. Baker, J.D.
Grundy County State’s Attorney
Russ Baker joined the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s office in March 2021 as an Assistant State’s Attorney where he continues to serve the citizens of Grundy County as a distinguished prosecutor.
State’s Attorney Baker completed his undergraduate training at Elmhurst University in 1985 graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degrees in Economics and Finance. He went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from Northern Illinois University School of Law in 1988 and achieved admission to the Illinois State bar that same year.
State’s Attorney Baker retired in December 2019 from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office after over 30 years of service prosecuting every type of violent felony, with a concentration on Homicides. Mr. Baker also had distinguished tours of duty in Financial Crimes, Public Integrity and Unsolved/Cold Case Homicide Units within the Special Prosecutors Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. In his career, State’s Attorney Baker tried over 125 Felony Jury Trials with all types of crimes including over 40 First Degree Murder trials.
During his tenure in Grundy County, Mr. Baker has performed every duty in the office from Traffic, Misdemeanors, Felonies and Civil in addition to serving as First Assistant State’s Attorney. Russ was appointed to lead his office in December 2022 as the Grundy County State’s Attorney. He still handles all the Civil matters as State’s Attorney in addition to his own Felony case load.
